In late February, a remarkable rescue cat named Big Bertha arrived at the Jefferson County Humane Society in Ohio, capturing the hearts of staff and volunteers immediately. While most cats come to shelters due to a change in circumstances or abandonment, Bertha stood out for an entirely different reason—her extraordinary size.
At 21 pounds, Bertha was so heavy that the standard cat scale couldn’t accommodate her. Staff had to resort to using the dog scale just to get an accurate measurement, highlighting both the severity of her condition and the challenge that lay ahead in helping her regain health.
Bertha’s arrival marked the beginning of a transformative journey, not just for her, but for the staff who would become deeply invested in her recovery. “I have been working with shelter animals for over 10 years, and she is, by far, the most overweight kitty I have encountered,” said Brandi DeNoon-Damewood, development manager at the shelter.
Her condition was a serious health concern, affecting her mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life.
A Heavy Burden
Bertha’s weight was the result of a combination of factors. The petite, short-legged cat had severe dental issues, including infected, loose, and broken teeth, which made eating painful. To accommodate her needs, she was placed on a soft food diet.
Unfortunately, Bertha consumed this food in excess, likely as a coping mechanism for previous periods of food scarcity. “She may have gone days without any food whatsoever, and those days are forever carried with her throughout the rest of her life,” DeNoon-Damewood explained.
The team at Jefferson County Humane Society recognized that Bertha’s obesity wasn’t merely a cosmetic issue—it was a matter of health and survival. Excess weight can lead to heart problems, joint pain, diabetes, and a shortened lifespan in cats. Immediately, the shelter staff designed a comprehensive plan to support her physical and emotional recovery.
Veterinary care, dental surgery, a monitored diet, and supervised exercise all became part of Bertha’s routine. Even a supportive sling was employed to help her move around safely as she adjusted to her weight loss regimen.
Beyond the physical recovery, the shelter staff noticed that Bertha’s personality began to shine through as she became healthier. Once shy and reserved, she started to engage more with staff and volunteers, becoming more vocal and affectionate.
“She LOVES to ‘talk,’ and when she wants attention, she will call out for you to come over to her,” DeNoon-Damewood shared. Bertha’s transformation was evident not only in her appearance but in her spirit, giving the team hope that she would find a forever home soon.
A Path to a New Beginning
By the end of March, Bertha had already made impressive progress, shedding pounds and becoming more agile. While she still had some weight to lose, her overall health and energy levels were improving significantly. The shelter team worked tirelessly to keep her engaged, providing enrichment activities, playtime, and gentle encouragement. Their dedication paid off, as Bertha’s playful and affectionate side continued to blossom.
In early April, Bertha’s journey took a joyful turn—she was adopted into a loving home. Her new owner was committed to continuing Bertha’s weight management plan, ensuring she maintained a balanced diet and received plenty of exercise. With proper care, Bertha is expected to reach a healthier weight and continue living a happy, fulfilling life with her new family.
Bertha’s story is more than a tale of a cat overcoming obesity; it is a powerful reminder of the dedication of shelter staff, the importance of veterinary care, and the potential for second chances in the lives of animals in need. Her journey highlights how much love, attention, and patience can transform the life of an animal, giving them not just a chance at survival but a thriving, joyful existence.
For staff, volunteers, and visitors at the Jefferson County Humane Society, Bertha has become a symbol of resilience, hope, and the profound impact of care. Her journey demonstrates that no matter the challenges, with the right support, even the heaviest burdens can be overcome.
Now, Bertha is enjoying life in her forever home, embracing a healthier lifestyle, and sharing her affectionate personality with the family who cherishes her.
