In a heartwarming twist of fate, four orange kittens have found their forever home at Jeptha Creed Distillery in Shelbyville, Kentucky. What began as a simple, unexpected discovery has blossomed into a charming story of rescue, companionship, and the joyful chaos only kittens can bring.
The distillery, known for its handcrafted bourbon, now boasts an unlikely but beloved team of “employees” who have won the hearts of staff and visitors alike.
Back in the spring of 2017, the distillery team was working outdoors, spreading straw around the property, when something caught their attention. As they moved hay bales, four tiny kittens tumbled out from one of them.
“As we were spreading straw and picking up hay bales, they just came tumbling out of one of them,” recalled Autumn Nethery, co-owner and vice president of operations at Jeptha Creed Distillery. “They were clearly frightened and starving. We couldn’t see their mother anywhere, so we knew we had to help.”
The kittens were barely old enough to eat on their own. Without hesitation, the staff took them in, bottle-feeding them and providing the care they desperately needed. Over time, the little furballs thrived, growing into healthy, affectionate cats.
The distillery team decided to give them playful names inspired by the bourbon-making process: Malt, Wheat, Barley, and Rye. Their personalities quickly became as distinct as their names, adding charm and character to the distillery’s already lively atmosphere.
A New Family at the Distillery
As the kittens grew, they became an inseparable part of the Jeptha Creed family. During the day, they can often be found napping in sunlit corners or playfully exploring barrels and crates. But when visitors arrive, the four sisters are quick to spring into action.
“During tours, they’ll wake up and put on a show,” Nethery said with a smile. “They love to be petted, and they really enjoy all the attention from our guests. They’re playful, silly, and affectionate — the perfect ambassadors for our distillery.”
Visitors are charmed not only by the kittens’ cuteness but also by the way they interact with one another. Colleagues and guests alike have witnessed Malt, Wheat, Barley, and Rye curling up together, grooming each other, or playfully batting at one another’s tails.
The sight of four tiny cats enjoying life together has become a symbol of resilience, joy, and the unexpected moments of happiness that animals can bring into human lives.
Despite their playful demeanor, the kittens have also become part of the distillery’s daily operations in their own unique way. At night, they serve as the distillery’s unofficial security team, prowling the property and keeping watch over the grounds. Though they may not chase away intruders, their presence alone has added a sense of life and activity to the distillery, creating a welcoming atmosphere for staff and visitors alike.
More Than Just Mascots
Malt, Wheat, Barley, and Rye have become far more than just mascots for Jeptha Creed. Their story highlights the profound impact that a little kindness and attention can have on vulnerable animals.
The kittens, once abandoned and alone, have found a loving home where they are cherished and celebrated. The distillery’s team often shares updates and adorable antics online, connecting with a broader audience who follow their adventures on social media. Their TikTok and Instagram pages have garnered attention, allowing fans from around the world to witness the kittens’ playful personalities and affectionate interactions.
Autumn Nethery reflects on the kittens’ journey: “We never expected these four little kittens to become such an integral part of our distillery family. They bring so much joy to our daily lives and to everyone who visits. They remind us that sometimes the most unexpected moments can bring the most happiness.”
This story also serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of compassion and rescue. By giving these kittens a safe space and consistent care, Jeptha Creed Distillery not only saved their lives but also created a lasting bond that enriches both the cats and the people around them.
For the staff, visitors, and countless fans who follow the kittens’ adventures, Malt, Wheat, Barley, and Rye are proof that happiness often arrives in the most unexpected forms — sometimes in the shape of four tiny orange kittens who decided to take over a Kentucky distillery.
